Deformation and failure behaviour of a titanium alloy Ti-407 with reduced aluminium content: A comparison with Ti-6Al-4V in tension and compression

The titanium alloy Ti-407 (Ti407) is a new being considered for single load to failure applications where energy absorption key requirement. This work characterised the deformation and mechanisms of Ti407 in uniaxial tension compression at quasi-static increased strain rates. results are compared with equivalent tests on Ti-6Al-4 V (Ti64) provide benchmark. stress-strain data under each condition reveals reduced strength but significantly ductility Ti64. aluminium content thought allow additional dislocation motion delay crack initiation propagation. crystallographic texture analysis deformed specimens further suggests that response an applied stress, proves more sensitive texturing exhibits greater grain elongation rotation comparison Its ability accommodate before (than Ti64) will opportunities improved impact performance, as well machinability formability (and potentially lower manufacturing cost).
